City of Cape May - Jacob Jones Memorial Monument
The Jacob Jones Memorial Monument Committee aims to create a public monument in Cape May, New Jersey, in tribute to the 131 fallen crew members of the destroyer, the USS Jacob Jones (DD-130), the first American warship sunk by a German U-Boat after Germany declared war on the United States during World War II. This tragedy occurred off Cape May’s shoreline on February 28, 1942.
This monument is, as well, aimed to honor the hundreds of other sailors lost during the “Battle of the Atlantic” (1939-1945).
It is designed to inspire humility, gratitude, reverence and respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our precious freedom.
